The best way to describe what hypnosis is is to tell you a client story. Julie, an 11 year old girl was suffering from anxiety about and around school came in for a session. Janet her mom brought her in and said, "Anxiety is getting the way of Julie's happiness, her performance at school. Can you help her overcome her anxiety?"
The first thing I did
I put Julie in a very relaxed space by getting her take a deep breath in and hold it for a few seconds and slowly let it out. Then I led her down a path of ever deepening relaxation. This is called an induction. I got her so relaxed that her conscious mind started to step aside.
I knew I was communicating directly with Julie's unconscious mind when I gave her a suggestion that she followed. I suggested that Julies right hand was holding 10 helium balloons and they were lifting her right arm up higher and higher. Sure enough, Julies right arm started lifting up. Once she was in a trance the real work began.
I took her through an Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) technique to remove the anxiety that she was feeling. Combining NLP and hypnosis is the fasted way to create lasting change. Once the change was done I said, "I'm gonna count to three. And when I get to three you're gonna feel great, 123! Julie opened her eyes and felt great. I asked her to think about school and how tough it could be and she reported she felt great about it.
Janet asked her, "So what was it like?" Julie answered, "I could hear clearly what Umar was telling me, and at the same time, it was like, I couldn't."
What she was trying to describe was an altered state where she was totally in charge and knew exactly what was going on. Put another way, Hypnosis is a way to put your conscious mind aside for a moment so you can go through a session without that inner voice telling you "This won't work!!" Your unconscious mind can create the changes you need. Once done, your conscious mind comes back and runs the show.
Hypnosis is simple as 1, 2, 3!
